Shown in early paintings of Beaufort, The George Mosse Stoney house was constructed circa 1798. Built in the Federal style and remodeled in the Greek style in the 1840's the at the time owner capitilized on the sweeping views and prevailing southern breezes from the Beaufort River by adding the wide double piazzas. Also rear rooms were added to the structure, which was originally one room deep, creating a classic T-shaped Beaufort house.

In 1866, Austrian jeweler Moritz Pollitzer, one of a number of European immigrants who arrived in post-Civil War Beaufort, purchased the home. Prominent in Beaufort politics and cultural life, the Pollitzers owned the property for five generations. Later the home was converted into a duplex.
